But be good at darts to start with certainly helps
Business is like throwing darts. We are always looking for the bullseye, the magic bullet, the rocket to the stratosphere. But for some reason, we place all our hopes on just one idea.
I'm a firm believer of statistics and probability. My parents still remind me to this day about something I said as a kid.. "I can't imagine a day without maths". And it's true! Which is also why darts are like business ideas.
- Be good at darts
- Throw lots of darts
Neither of these are guarantees of hitting the bullseye. Here's the maths - If you could get a bullseye 10% of the time and you threw 5 darts, you would have a 50% chance of getting a bullseye.
Let's translate. You might have a particular skill and/or passion with which you want to pursue an idea/dream/opportunity. If you chase just one idea, the chances of failure are huge. But if you have the capacity to follow several ideas, the chances of failure are minimised. Better still, you can exterminate ideas as it becomes apparent they have no future.
Don't follow just one idea. Have many. Follow the ones with the most promise and stop the ones that don't.
It's easy to come up with just one idea. The clever come up with many.
